Mainly, just knowing that mental illness stigma is so rampant has made me feel vulnerable and guarded with others. I feel the need to “put on a good show” and make up reasons for not participating in events when I’m depressed or allow others to explain away my erratic behavior when I am manic.
Only a select few know about my bipolar diagnosis and I wish I could open up to more people whom I do consider close, but the fear of rejection is too strong due to the stigmas and misconceptions. It’s a frustrating, lonely feeling.
